I watched this when The Office first aired! I loved how Jim was so nervous and Pam acted like everything was under control. At first I thought this is so not real, she would not be like this with her first baby, but then... She comes out and admits how scared she is! I loved how they portrayed the dynamics between the two of them. Even after when they were trying to breastfeed. That can be really hard for many new mama's, but the joy when they latch happens...BEAUTIFUL! Thanks for sharing this everyone! Can't wait for the next show!

What a fun depiction of the anxiety often present in the early labor period. Both "is this really it?" and "knowing when to go" are very big questions for most parents-to-be. Most hospitals and care providers urge parents to stay home as long as possible (usually until contractions are 3-5 minutes apart). It's proven that doing so shortens labors and decreases the chances of interventions. But support in that period is crucial to having it be a calm and nourishing part of labor. The anxious urgency of "OK! We gotta distract Pam!" cracked me up!

On another note, how unfortunately truthful that it was insurance coverage dictating care choices...

@Anonymous, I know I cry every time Pam freaks out. Most mamas feel that way at some time.

@Gracie, Wait until you see the delivery! Very interesting on how the postpartum period is played. I'll post it after our next show where we talk about how a postpartum doula can support families.

I am a big fan of The Office and was so impressed with how they handled Pam's labor. I loved that this was not the average media portrayal of "water breaks lets rush to the hospital so the doctor can deliver this baby!". This episode really normalized the labor process and i think the writers did an amazing job of showing viewers what a healthy labor can be! Two thumbs up!

This show is great. I love the funny way they distract Pam. Jim being nervous is very normal and real. Pam does a great job and when she says she can't do it, I love the support she gets from Jim.
The writers did a great job tying in healthcare issues and the normal progression of labor. I can't wait to see the next episode of the delivery.

I've been hearing about this episode all week! It was not only humorous, but more importantly it portrayed a very normal labor instead of sensationalizing the process. Loved the interaction between Pam and Jim and the other office workers. So true and so funny how anxious people can get around a pregnant/laboring mom. Kudos!

@Jaqui, I have a great video called Laboring Under An Illusion that really goes into how the media scares us silly. I'd love to see an updated version with this added.

@Lilia, I will be adding the delivery here next week. LOTS to discuss from that episode as well.

@Kelly, :)
